In 2011 a major industrial project in the history of East Kazakhstan Region (the East of the country) was completed - Copper Plant construction at Ust-Kamenogorsk Metallurgical Complex (UK MC). State of the art operation of Kazzinc celebrated its first 10-year anniversary late in June.
In 2005 Kazzinc made the decision to implement a large-scale New Metallurgy Project. It included upgrade of the existing operations, considerable reduction of environmental impact due to modernization of lead smelter and construction of new production operations facilities. Copper Plant construction took 4 years and it involved over 5,000 specialists from 10 countries of the world. This plant was built from the scratch and it was integrated into the existing operations of UKMC. In 2011 new Copper Plant produced the highest purity Cathode Copper 99.99%.
It accommodated the technologies used by the industry top performers from Australia, Germany, Japan, Austria and Sweden. Copper Plant team is 450 employees and 4 plants which produce 70,000 tons of cathode copper per annum. Over 10 million copper cathodes have been harvested by Copper Refinery for 10 years in operation.
This plant has an extensive experience in processing copper raw material with basic metal content as low as 10-12%. This made UKMC Copper Plant a world leader among other operations using Australian ISASMELT technology.
